Light of the World by Greg Olsen
The Godhead is comprised God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. Mormons believe that they are three different beings who are one in purpose. They each have distinct roles in bringing about this mission—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
The Holy Ghost does not have a glorified body of flesh and bones as do Heavenly Father and Jesus, but instead is in the form of a spirit, enabling Him to dwell within us. The Holy Ghost’s role is to be a companion to all those who are worthy and to testify of the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
According to Mormon beliefs, Jesus taught the people about the Holy Ghost. In the New Testament, he warns that all sins can be forgiven except blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, which is to see the Christ through the power of the Holy Ghost and then deny Him. Jesus encourages us to be worthy of the companionship of the spirit at all times, because when we are not worthy, he will leave us. The Holy Ghost cannot dwell in unholy places. Throughout His life, Jesus taught by the power of the Holy Ghost. When Jesus taught the masses, it was the Holy Ghost who confirmed unto them that the things He taught were true.
The Holy Ghost can be felt by anyone. But the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost can only be received through baptism. When Jesus was baptized, we read that the Holy Ghost transcended in the form of a dove and was His constant companion throughout His life. The Holy Ghost will help us feel Christ’s love and influence us to make wise decisions. The Holy Ghost knows all things and can lead us to know future events. The Holy Ghost can also warn us of danger and prompt us to correct action.
In John 14:26, we read,”The comforter, which is the Holy Ghost , whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” He supports and uplifts all of Christ’s teachings unto us. He is a teacher, just as Christ is. Both He and Christ stand as witnesses of God and the truthfulness of His gospel.
Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart (Doctrine and Covenants 8:2).
And again, it shall come to pass that on as many as ye shall baptize with water, ye shall lay your hands, and they shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and shall be looking forth for the signs of my coming, and shall know me (Doctrine and Covenants 39:23).
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (I Corinthians 2:14).
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law (Galatians 5:22, 23).
Nothing in this life is of greater worth than the supernal gift of the Holy Ghost. It is the source of joy, peace, knowledge, strength, love, and every other good thing. With the Atonement, it is the power by which we may be changed and made strong where we are weak. With the priesthood, it is the power by which marriages and families are sealed together eternally. It is the power by which the Lord makes Himself manifest unto those who believe in Him. Every good thing depends on getting and keeping the power of the Holy Ghost in our lives. Everything depends on that (Ensign, Nov 2008, 34–36).
