In Mosiah 2:17 of the Book of Mormon, we read, “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” Jesus Christ was a perfect man who showed a perfect love for everyone He met. His life was dedicated to serving others. If there is anything to be learned from His time here on earth it is to love one another. And through serving others, we show our deepest respect for our fellow man and our Father in Heaven.
Jesus spent His time on earth serving His fellow man. The New Testament is filled with accounts that prove His commitment to serving others. “Those who followed Jesus called Him ‘Master.’ Yet, although He was their leader, Jesus taught them He was their servant. He wrapped a towel around Himself and washed their feet in a basin of water. He assumed the role of a servant, even though he was considered a master by His followers. He told them that if He was willing to serve them by washing their feet, they ought to be willing to serve each other” (see John 13:5-17). Often times we think we are too busy to serve others or we are too overwhelmed with what is going on in our own lives. Jesus proves that no matter where we are in life, we need to stop and help our fellow man. Mormon beliefs emphasizes that service should be one of our main priorities here on earth.
Jesus taught through parables the importance of service. In the parable of the ‘sheep and the goats’ he says, “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Jesus tells us to serve ALL men, regardless of who they are.
Jesus never gave up an opportunity to serve others. He spent His lifetime blessing the sick and feeding the hungry. He was busy and had stresses just like we have today. In the New Testament, we read about the encounter with Jesus and the woman with the issue of blood. Jesus was traveling through the city when a woman touched His robe, desperate to be healed by Him. Though in a hurry, Jesus stopped to heal the woman. He always put people before Himself. He dedicated His time to serving others. And it brought Him great joy and peace.
Jesus spent His entire earthly existence serving His father in Heaven. He was sent to earth to do His fathers will, not His own. He put His father’s desires before His own. He taught His father’s lessons. He ultimately sacrificed His life when he died on the cross because it was His father’s will. We need to follow Christ’s example. Mormons believe that we need to follow the commandments and serve God before we serve ourselves.
Through Jesus Christ, we find our greatest example of a service-oriented person.
